April 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the release by the Kingsmen of Richard Berry's "Louie Louie," famous for having the foulest lyrics never written. A letter to Attorney General Robert Kennedy from an outraged parent caused a 31-month investigation, at the end of which the FBI concluded it was "unintelligible at any speed." Rumors about the lyrics are said to have originated in the South but got their greatest traction in the Midwest, where Indiana's governor mounted an effort to stop broadcasts of the recording. As late as 2005, a superintendent in Michigan tried to ban a middle school marching band from performing the song, but relented.
