In Cut the Law Firms, Keep the Lawyers, the WSJ reports on yet another sign that the business model of the traditional law firm is under stress -- companies hiring for their in-house legal staff directly out of law school. Some of the in-house hiring is a hybrid model, as is the case with a new Yale Law grad who will work for Pfizer in New York for a half year, then move to a law firm to work on Pfizer matters. The story says that If she performs well (and the hiring needs hold up), she will be able to choose whether to stay in-house or join the law firm.
