Politico has a story, Judge a Campaign By Its Lawyer, that suggests the ways in which a candidate's selection of a campaign lawyer can be revealing. There's no Michigan angle -- even Michigan's own Thaddeus McCotter has chosen an out-of-state firm. Here's the lineup:
- Barack Obama: Bob Bauer, Perkins Coie
- Michele Bachmann: Bill McGinley, Patton Boggs
- Herman Cain: "a relatively obscure Wisconsin law firm"
- Jon Huntsman - Craig Engle, Arent Fox
- Thaddeus McCotter: Holtzman Vogel
- Ron Paul: Brett Kappel, Arent Fox
- Tim Pawlenty: Michael Toner, Arent Fox
- Mitt Romney: Ben Ginsberg, Patton Boggs
- Rick Santorum: Cleta Mitchell, Foley Lardner
- Note: The Politico story didn't extend to possible Presidential candidate Rick Perry.
Although there's no Michigan lawyer angle this season, SBM Blog notes the Patton Boggs and Arent Fox both have University of Michigan Law School grads on their Political Law farm teams -- associates Megan Sowards at Patton Boggs and Tim Bucknell at Arent Fox.
