Prof. Mark West has been appointed as the next dean of the University of Michigan Law School. Pending approval by the University of Michigan Board of Regents, West will take over from current dean Evan Caminker on September 1, when the 10-year tenure of current dean Evan Caminker ends. West is the Nippon LIfe Professor of Law, and a scholar of the Japanese legal system. He joined the faculty in 1998. West earned his JD from Columbia University School of Law and his BA from Rhodes College. Prior to his academic career he practiced in the firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP in New York and Tokyo, and clerked for the Hon. Eugene H. Nickerson of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
