The Detroit Free Press reported yesterday morning that 36th District Court Judge Brenda Sanders and Probate Judge Charles Nebel, of Alger and Schoolcraft counties, have received orders of suspension from the Michigan Supreme Court for violations of Michigan's code of judicial conduct. Sanders was suspended without pay for 21 days; Nebel for 90 days.
The court acted on the findings of the Judicial Tenure Commission, which discovered that Sanders committed misconduct by campaigning for and soliciting campaign donations as a candidate in a special election for Detroit mayor after her election to the bench in 2008. The JTC found Nebel violated the code when he was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence in July 2009.
Sanders was suspended without pay for 21 days; Nebel for 90 days.
